A Grocery Tale

Yesterday was one of those imperfectly perfect evenings. Drew and I were both home before 5. We took our little lion man and went for a walk down the middle of our curvy country road and would step into the grass when cars whizzed past.

We talked about the future and turned around when the sunshine ran out. We went to the grocery store in our sweats and I'm embarrassed to say how much we spent.

While we do love fruit, this is a more accurate portrayal of what we buy at the grocery:

We are always pooped by the time we finish at the store (we only shop once a month) so we grabbed some sushi and headed home. On the car-ride home Drew's face lit up "We can eat our sushi in the bathtub." And so sushi in the bathtub it was. Sometimes our life makes me giggle...

We also decided while at the store that we want to become tea drinkers neither of us have had tea before so we bought 2 kinds of tea  After our sushi bath, we fixed our tea and "steeped" it as best we knew how.

We were both feeling fancy and British as we sat down in our jammers to sip tea before bed.

Then as we sipped it, we realized it just tastes like warm water. And we were sad.

Dear tea-drinkers, please tell us what we did wrong because we desperately want to share 'spots of tea' before bed but if it's just gonna be like hot water then I'd rather have a nice stout cup o' joe.

We dumped the tea and went to bed at 9:30. A perfect evening.

I could never have planned this date but it has been my very favorite so far.

  1. Sound like a lovely date! I love tea, but I know it's not for everyone. I've heard other people say it just tastes like dirty water, so you aren't alone!

I really like Earl Grey or Lady Grey for black tea. They each have subtle spice flavors, and Lady Grey (Twinings brand) as a strong citrus flavor which is really nice. I ususally avoid those at night, though, because caffeine really affects my sleep. In the evenings I'll drink any number of herbal teas (mint, chamomile, zingers). Celestial Seasonings has several samplers so you can try a lot of them. Good luck! I'm anxious to hear if you find one you like!

  2. Ahhhh I love this story!! Sushi in the BATHTUB!?!?! That is too hilarious. Was there water in the bathtub, too, or did you just sit there? Also, tea pretty much always just tastes like water and disappointment. I get the fruitiest flavors I can find and then let it steep for a lonnnng time (oh, and never black tea, always white or green) and then add some honey and then it tastes SORTA okay. But yeah. Still 90% disappointing.

  3. I stumbled upon your blog and have been scrolling and reading, but had to stop and comment on this one. I was thinking you were in VA (or somewhere near it) but maybe I'm off. And I suppose the mountains of Virginia might not count as "the South"...but I couldn't believe when you said you'd never had tea. I then realized you meant hot tea, which I had never had until I went to college. But in the south, sweet tea is a staple! :) You probably did not let the tea steep long enough. A full five minutes is necessary, and it might take longer...the altitude may affect it. (I don't really know. But doesn't altitude affect most things that go on in the kitchen?) I've been making tea for a long time, and I still mess it up! For hot tea, just black tea is good (Lipton or some fancy version of the same), as well as English, Irish, Earl, and Lady Grey. They are all good. Do you like sweetened tea? I do, so I add sugar, and a bit of milk. I believe British hot tea is always made with whole milk. I might have made that part up. And if you do make it like the British, it's a little more complicated (with a tea pot warmed by hot water and all). :)
The other thing that made me comment was the peanut butter cups. (My verb and predicate noun don't match. I'm sorry.) It made me laugh to see them, because my husband is a PBC fanatic and came home the other day from some store with at least three bags of the eggs that you have pictured, and I think also two bags of the snack cups (not the tiny ones, but the ones that you can eat in a couple of bites).
So I figured I would say hello, and I'll be back; I've enjoyed reading. (I liked the grizzly bear post very much...I thought that was an excellent analogy.)
